Plesk Hosting

Plesk has still not been able to overcome the popularity of cPanel and Direct Admin in the world of hosting; however, they are starting to gain momentum.

Plesk hosting has several advantages over its more popular counterparts. Unfortunately, most of the benefits only help the administrator.

If you are hosting your website on your own server, then Plesk should be considered a legitimate option.

It has proven to be one of the most cost-effective options available with a variety of different pricing plans based upon how many domains will be using it.  It also has the advantage of being compatible with UNIX, Linux, and Windows.

Unfortunately there are some usability issues that seem to have been plaguing plesk for some time.

1.    Poor Data Storage

With plesk hosting, you will be saving files only to the server disk.  This increases the likelihood that you will have problems storing larger files.

It also means that the administrator will need to backup their files often which can further perpetuate the storage inefficiencies.

2.    Lacks Popular Features

Even with the release of its latest version, Plesk does not feature a Fantastico-like resource.  As long as Fantastico is considered to be a “must-have” tool, plesk will always seem to lack ease and features.

Additionally, plesk does not have a simple FTP upload option like cPanel does.

3.    Wasting Time on Set Up

The way that plesk is designed, several popular applications have access restrictions automatically applied to them.  While this does not stop the administrator from changing these restrictions, it is simply a waste of time.

Unfortunately, if you are a first time administrator, it may take more time than it is worth.  A primary reason for this is that plesk has been plagued with security issues in recent versions, and these restrictions are meant to make it a more secure platform.

Plesk is sure to continue drawing in new fans because of its low price point and ability to seem very user friendly for the most part.  Once you are comfortable with Plesk, it is very easy to work with and has a very intuitive layout.

Many people will not be able to overcome not having Fantastico with plesk hosting.  For those that can live without Fantastico, you won’t have to worry about data storage issues if you try this hosting.
