Image Hosting

Image hosting websites were once considered to only benefit bloggers that did not have a web hosting account.

However, they are becoming more and more popular for even the most discerning of webmasters.  Images can quickly suck up valuable system resources and can also make your website load time much longer.

Another problem, especially for bloggers with limited bandwidth, is that images can consume so much bandwidth that the sites will cause server downtime and deliver an “internal server error” message on a regular basis.

Since so many free image hosting websites are now available, why would anyone upload images to servers and potentially reduce the websites performance?

The only problem, with so many free image hosting websites, is which one or ones to choose.

Image Hosting Websites

Here is a quick look at some of the most popular free image hosting websites.

1.    Flickr

Flickr is considered by many to be one of the top photo-sharing and image hosting websites around.

It allows you to upload both images and videos.  Then you can securely share your images with friends and family or add them to your website.

Many people prefer to only upload images because the storage capacity is limited as well as the available monthly bandwidth.  Free accounts are limited to 100MB and two 90 second videos a month.

2.    PhotoBucket

PhotoBucket is another great free image hosting website.  Currently, it hosts more than 25 million unique hits a month in the United States, and almost twice that worldwide.

PhotoBucket is another premier image hosting website and allows uploading, sharing, linking, and even searching for photos, videos, and graphics.  A free account holds thousands of photos and videos.

3.    ImageShack

ImageShack has proven to be a contender in the arena of free image hosting websites.  They allow for a little more variety than some of its competitors.

You can upload images and videos like every other site, but you can also upload flash files.  Every image needs to 1.5 megabytes or less.

While this may sound limiting, any image larger than 1.5 megabytes will really drag down your websites load time.  The same is true for flash files.

4.    Pict

Another great image hosting website is Pict.  Pict allows you to upload images that are up to 3.5 MB and support a variety of formats including JPG, PNG, and GIF.  It can automatically resize your images as well as providing a number of other useful tools.
