DNS Hosting
DNS hosting is normally not an issue for people who are already using a shared hosting service. DNS hosting is almost always part of the package.
Unfortunately, if you are using either a virtual private server or dedicated server, you will need to find a DNS host, unless your domain name registrar will host your DNS for you.
Once you have set up your DNS hosting for your dedicated server, it is important to keep in mind that most registrars will require that you have at least two DNS servers. This means that you need your initial DNS server, but also use a secondary NS which serves primarily as a backup.
4 Important Criteria For Choosing The Best DNS Hosting Service
1. Physical Location
Most quality DNS hosting services have their DNS servers on networks that are geographically diverse. This helps to make sure that your domain name remains resolvable when the services are off-line. While it is great to have them close, having them on the same network ruins the concept of redundancy.
2. Cost
A large number of these services are “free”. While it is true that a rare few are actually free in every sense of the word, 99% are not. Instead they make their money off of extra services, pounding you with banner ads, or charge you to transfer your domain names to their servers. It is important to understand how much their free service will actually cost you.
3. Records/Domains
Free DNS services often limit the number of domains and DNS records that they will allow you to host, while a small fee will often increase the number. As long as you are not planning on hosting more than a few sites, choosing your service probably isn’t an issue. However, if you plan on having a large number of domains, this information could prove essential in the future.
4. Extras
There are number of extra features that are often provided, however they are not considered to be part of the free hosting. They can include: secondary DNS, Dynamic DNS, Web Forwarding, Email Forwarding, and much more. If any of these additional features are something that you will need, make sure to price them out and compare them before choosing your DNS hosting service.
