Hostorian’s Review

Performance

Several customers of 1&1 Internet Ltd. UK have posted their reviews of their performance. Most, if not all, have a negative review of their performance.

From horror stories of how their servers seem to be down intermittently to how everything is slower than a drugged tortoise on occasions, the impression we get is not good.

Of course, some people report good things too, but it does shake your confidence in them overall.

Features

This is probably the only good thing about 1&1 Internet Ltd. UK and their web hosting packages. They are loaded with features.

But then so is every other hosting provider. 😐 In fact, most hosting providers let you host more domains in a single account.

They offer about £400 worth of software for free with their web hosting packages, and you can also get RatePoint for free with select business packages. You get 100 business cards for free when you sign up for their 1&1 Home package.

Support and Customer Care

Support and customer care seems to be a joke, in the words of many of their customers (who are now ex-customers and very happy about it). Some people switched hosting providers solely because of 1&1 Internet UK’s poor customer support.

In fact, they put you on hold for such long periods that it might be worth getting a speaker-phone just so you can continue doing other work while you are waiting for someone to answer the phone.

Not just that, it’s a battle to get them to understand the problem, and an even bigger battle to get them to solve it in a timely manner.

Cons

  1. Canceling your account with them is very difficult, and requires you to fax a signed copy of your application to them.
  2. Support is outsourced to a non-English speaking country, and not only is the accent difficult to understand, the support staff doesn’t seem to be competent either.
  3. Because of their low prices, they are forced to share the same server among a lot of sites, and as a result the site performance is not up to the mark. Speeds are slow, and uptime is not good either.

Actual Customer Feedback

Awful, awful, awful service. Avoid these people like the plaque. I have customers who have registered domain names with one and one and releasing them to (better) other suppliers is a nightmare with .coms. The helpline is some far off country and the operators are difficult to understand especially when you require technical assistance.

I have bought an eshop from them and all I have to say is their online based program is so slow and you can not use any other things, they say you have 500mb but they don’t let you upload any thing to your space by any ftp or program other than their eshop which means you can only upload certain image files and that it.

Their customer service were alright in the begining but now no answer what so ever for a month or non at all for some of my posts.

I have to mention if you really want to go into truble then they are good at it.Parkook

Everything about 1&1 Internet Ltd. UK hosting is bad. May be a bit useful for registering cheap domains, but not good for hosting sites. Not recommended at all. Avoid at all costs.

  • I was so far really happy with the 1&1 product.
    I had to call the support for small problems, like when adding a new IP address on a server because only one part of the process is really made through the back office. The response was correct, and the problem solved within 12 hours.

    But on the 22 of June, I needed to add resource on my cloud dedicated server. So I upgraded the disk space of 100Go. The server went down, and was noted as reinitialising in the back office. Everything normal until then. This is a test server, but when I wanted to use it again one week after, the server was, and is still at this time reinitialising…

    I finally experience something very close to what digoart encountered (http://www.1and1faq.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1060)

    02nd July, I called the Help desk, they opened the case. Response was “OK, the case is now open, and the admin team will contact you once solved.”

    05 july Response was “OK not solved yet , but the admin team will contact you once solved.”

    06 july Response was “the admin team is working on it. Please be patient”.
    But I wanted to know more. To know was the problem, what actions were undertaken, how long would I still have to wait.
    Response was “the admin team is working on it. Please be patient”.
    I asked:
    – Is it possible to talked to the admin team ?
    – no, they are not reachable directly.
    – OK, could you talk to them to ask what is going on ?
    – No, I have not the authorization to do that. The admin team will contact you once your problem will be solved.
    – Can you transfert my call to someone who can contact the admin team ? We may find together a solution to provide the service I need…
    – No, I can’t do that.
    – Can I contact your manager ?
    – Yes off course, You can write a letter to him.
    – Can you give me his mail address, or phone number ?
    – No, he his only reachable by the post.

    I wrote to the Manager 2 times, but never received any answer. I e-mail to the billing department. No answer. I phone to the billing help desk. They ask me to write a letter to the manager…

    I called the Help desk every day. But the only response I had was “the admin team is working on it. Please be patient”.

    I subscribe to the 1&1 forum, but I do not have enought rights to post a message… I think this forum is not active anymore.

    I am waiting since 15 Days Nows…. 15 Days my server is not responding, and I cannot access the data on it. A chance for me, this server was a test server. But this experience scared me. I have 6 other dedicated servers hosted at 1&1. They are exploit servers, and I can’t afford to have them stopped more than 1 hour without having heavy consequences. The help desk is useless, and the admin team absolutely incompetent.

    My server is still down. I doubt 1&1 will succeed to get it working again. I am looking for an other hosting company.

  • hey there, this might be little offtopic, but i am hosting my site on hostgator and they will suspend my hosting in 4days, so i would like to ask you which hosting do you use or recommend?

  • The above report sums it up 1 & 1 ARE CROOKS. They set up an additional page on my account. nothing on it and no domain name but they started charging me twice, on the card I had used for my shop. Trying to resolve this has been a nightmare, passed around customer services, promised solutions which do not happen in practice, emails unreplied to. When card cancelled, sent demands by a collection company. It’s been a nightmare, they have taken my money and will not even withdraw the amount I have not paid to collection company. Be assured they will cheat you in the end. Do not go anywhere near them.
